Clinical Neuropathology &
Diagnostic biomarkers
Our research focuses on the molecular neuropathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we are unraveling the molecular changes occurring in diseases with neurofibrillary tangles composed of the tau protein (i.e., tauopathies). This diverse set of brain diseases includes dementias, such as Alzheimer's disease, movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and related conditions, and the long-term consequences of repetitive traumatic brain injury, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. We are using histological, genetic, cellular and molecular approaches to pinpoint underlying triggers of these diseases that can be used to develop biomarkers or targeted therapeutically. Recently, we have begun to deploy powerful artificial intelligence (machine learning)-based approaches, including computer vision, which is revolutionizing our approach to studying neurodegeneration.
