CRARY LAB

Every brain that arrives at our laboratory tells a story—carrying within it traces of the cellular and molecular events that led to disease and the potential keys to prevention and cure. We believe answers reside within patients, not just animal models or cell cultures that merely reflect the disease process. Our research focuses on the tauopathies—a diverse family of brain diseases including Alzheimer's, brain aging, Parkinson's, progressive supranuclear palsy, frontotemporal dementia, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy—using an interdisciplinary approach combining traditional histology with cutting-edge genetics, transcriptomics, and revolutionary artificial intelligence tools. We deploy these methods not just to catalog what went wrong, but with the focused goal of pinpointing the earliest triggers when prevention might be possible, because we believe it's never too late for neuropathology. Importantly, we measure our success not only by what we discover, but by how generously we share tissues, data, and knowledge with the global research community, training the next generation of neuropathologists who will multiply our impact far beyond what any single laboratory could achieve. Behind every breakthrough is a patient who chose to contribute their final gift to science and a family who trusted us to honor their loved one's legacy by turning tragedy into hope for countless others.
